Contactless technology

The faster way to pay for everyday items

Rather than trying to find loose change, people are increasingly paying for smaller items with their debit cards. This has now gone a step further with the introduction of a new, innovative technology called contactless that should make shopping even quicker and easier.

It allows you to pay for most of your transactions that cost up to £15 without even having to enter your PIN. And the good news is that we’re starting to include this new payment function in our debit cards – if your card has the contactless symbol, it has it built in.

More and more retailers are introducing contactless, so remember to look out for the contactless symbol wherever you shop – it’s the fast, convenient and safe way to pay.

If you don’t have this new technology on your card but would like to order a new one with it, please visit your local branch who will be able to arrange it for you.

Use new contactless technology today

If there’s a contactless symbol on the front of your new Lloyds TSB Visa debit card, it means it can work with the new contactless technology, as well as existing chip and PIN services. You can then start to use this new way to pay for purchases up to £15 right away.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Look out for the contactless symbol in shops, stores and restaurants.
  2. When you’re ready to pay just hold your card over the contactless card-reader. Payment will be completed in less than a second.
  3. The contactless card-reader will confirm your transaction’s complete, and you can then get going.

And just like existing chip and PIN services, you can see how much  you spend when you pay by contactless because you’ll see every transaction on your current account statement.

Find out where you can use contactless

The list of shops, stores, cafes and restaurants that use contactless technology is growing all the time. Over 50,000 card readers have already been upgraded to accept contactless payments in the UK.

To get an idea of where you can go contactless right now visit www.visa.co.uk/paywave.

Tap in your postcode and you’ll see all the retailers in your local area that have contactless card readers.

Pay with security and speed

When you use contactless technology to make purchases you’re not exposed to any greater risk of fraud as it uses the same high level security features that are behind existing chip and PIN services.

We’ve also included some extra security features –

  • To activate contactless on your new card you’ll need to verify your identity by carrying out a standard chip and PIN transaction by entering your PIN on your very first card purchase.
  • Every now and then, you’ll be asked to enter your PIN for what would normally be a contactless transaction, just for added security. You can also pick up your receipt after using contactless to check against your current account statement.

Quick questions and answers

What is contactless?
Contactless is a new payment function for transactions of up to £15. You pay for your goods simply by holding your card in front of the contactless card-reader.

What are its benefits?
It’s quick, convenient and saves you time – there’s no need to rummage around for the right amount of change, or enter your PIN for most of your contactless transactions.

How does contactless differ from chip and PIN?
Rather than putting your card into a terminal and entering your PIN, when you’re ready to pay you simply hold your card over the contactless card-reader to complete the payment.

Do I have to use contactless instead of paying with cash or using chip and PIN services?
No, it’s completely up to you. By having contactless technology built into your debit card, you just have more options of how to pay for your goods of up to £15 where you see the contactless symbol.

Is paying by contactless secure?
Contactless uses the latest secure Visa technology required by the payment industry. And, in the unlikely event that it is lost or stolen, your card also has protection against fraud loss - providing you take the kind of precautions we recommend and that you let us know as soon as you realise you no longer have it.

How can I be sure I’m not being charged twice on my card when I pay?
For a transaction to be duplicated you would need to be asked for payment twice, and present your card twice, so this is very unlikely.

Where can I use it?
Many retailers have already installed contactless card readers, with more big names bringing in this new technology all the time. Although you can use your Lloyds TSB Visa debit card abroad, you can only use contactless for purchases in the UK at the moment.

For a full list of all the places where you can use contactless, including your local retailers, visit www.visa.co.uk/paywave.

Do I have to pay a fee for using contactless?
No, this new easy way to pay is completely free.

How long will it take for contactless payments to appear on my account?
Payments made using contactless may not be deducted from your available account balance immediately, so it’s important that you keep track of your contactless usage.

If my debit card is stolen can it be used to pay for items again and again?
Your new card has a number of security features including limiting the amount of purchases that can be made before your PIN must be entered to complete what would normally be a contactless transaction.

What if I don’t want contactless technology on my Visa debit card?
You can simply choose not to use it and continue to use chip and PIN card-readers when you make your purchases. However, if you would prefer not to have contactless technology built into your card, then get in touch with us and we’ll send you a Visa debit card like your previous one.
