We’re committed to making your Internet banking experience as safe as possible. Here are the ways that we protect your security.
Using three random characters
After entering your User ID and Password we will ask you for three random characters from your Memorable Information using drop-down menus. This protects you in two ways. Inputting three random characters prevents someone from gaining access to your complete log on details at any one time, and using dropdown menus protects you from fraudsters who may try to gain access to your details using keylogging software. Never share your password or memorable information with anyone – you’ll compromise your security.
Look for the padlock
When you log on to our Internet banking service you’re always in a ‘secure session’ – this is shown by the padlock symbol in the bottom right-hand corner of your web browser. It means that your personal information will be coded before it leaves your computer.

Check the time
Every time you log on, we display the time and date you last logged on to our Internet banking service. Check that the time and date shown match the last time you logged on. If they don’t, someone else may have accessed your accounts online. Check your accounts carefully and if you notice anything suspicious, contact us immediately on 0845 3000 116** (+44 20 7649 9437 from overseas).
Automatic log off
If after logging on to our Internet banking service, you don’t use it for 10 minutes, you will automatically be logged off. A pop-up window will display to tell you if you are nearing the time when you will be logged off. This security measure ensures that if you’ve left your computer or have forgotten to log off, there’s much less chance of anyone else accessing your accounts.
To eliminate this risk completely, please make sure you never leave your computer unattended while logged on, and always log off when you’ve finished using Internet banking.
Temporary denial of access
As a safety measure, if there are a number of incorrect attempts to log on to Internet banking we will disable your access to the service. This protects you against fraudsters trying to guess your details.
To reinstate your access, please click on 'Unable to log on?' on the log on page, and follow the instructions.
