Viruses and Malicious Software (Malware)

Malware & Internet Banking

Malware is a collective name for viruses and malicious software designed by fraudsters and may be harmful to your computer.

Some malware is designed to activate when you log on to Internet Banking.

Malware can record your password and memorable information and use it to gain access to your account. It can also trick you into making payments through screens that you may think are genuine websites.

How do I know if my computer has malware?

  • You might see unusual screens and pop-up messages prompting you to enter your personal information. We don’t normally ask, for example, for your date of birth and we don’t use pop-ups on our website.
  • You might be requested to make payments to an account you don’t recognise.
  • You might be asked for your full memorable information. Our log on page will only ever ask you to enter three random characters of your memorable information, from drop-down menus. An example of the genuine memorable information page is displayed below.

Memorable Information

How can I avoid infection by malicious software?

Viruses and malicious software (malware) can trick you by resembling other websites.

  • Social networking sites are a common source of infection. You need to be careful when downloading online content as while they may be free, they may also contain hidden malicious software.
  • Pop-up advertisements that appear on your screen often carry malware.

Make sure that any files or programs that you download, or any purchases that you make are from secure web pages or genuine retailers.

Should I use software to protect my computer?

Yes. We strongly recommend that you use an anti-virus solution on your computer and keep this up-to-date. Running and keeping this type of software up-to-date can help protect your computer from viruses and malicious software (malware).

You can also read more information about how you can help to keep yourself secure online by visiting our security centre.

Also keeping your Internet browser, operating system (e.g. Windows) and firewall up to date can reduce your chance of infection.

If you’re unsure whether the software on your computer is up to date this free health check will guide you through the relevant steps to ensure that your computer is set up for optimum security.

Our health check is provided through third party software designed to help you to keep your PC or Mac up to date and secure. None of these third party vendors are specifically endorsed or recommended by us and you should not rely on this as your sole method of protecting yourself from viruses and malicious software.

Reporting suspicious activity

To help us identify any viruses and malicious software (malware) and to protect other customers, please forward a screenshot of any suspicious pages to emailscams@lloydstsb.co.uk.

To take a screenshot, press Ctrl + PrtSc/Print Screen (this button can be found near the top of your keyboard). This will take a copy of the screen that you can see.

Paste this into an e-mail by right clicking on your mouse and selecting ‘paste’.
