Debit and credit card fraud service
Lloyds TSB use fraud detection systems to protect you from debit and credit card fraud. These systems highlight any unusual spending patterns on an account, and checks are then made to ensure purchases are valid. As part of our fraud detection service, we may call you if unusual transactions appear on your account (calls may use automated speech).
Shopping on the internet
Internet shopping is quickly becoming a popular and convenient way to make purchases. For added security, we’ve created Lloyds TSB Clicksafe. This free service gives you additional protection against card crime. Learn more and register for Lloyds TSB ClickSafe.
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind:
- only shop with reputable companies,
- never send an email with your card details or PIN, or enter this information on an non-secure web page,
- if you’re using Internet Explorer always look out for the padlock sign in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen - it means your card details are safeguarded by the site host.
Find out how to check whether a web page is secure.
When using your card to pay over the phone:
- never disclose your PIN (not even to your bank or the police),
- you may be asked for the last three digits on your card's signature strip – only give this information if you’re asked to by a company you trust.
To protect your identity make sure you:
- always keep receipts safe, and when you dispose of them make sure that your card details cannot be read. Using a paper-shredder or ripping the paper by hand before you dispose of it is a good way to help keep your details safe,
- know who you’re giving your card details to – and don't be afraid to ask them why they need this information.
Using a cash machine safely
When using a cash machine there are some things you should do to keep yourself safe.
When choosing a cash machine:
- if someone nearby looks suspicious or you feel uncomfortable before using a cash machine, please choose another,
- if there is anything unusual about the cash machine or there are obvious signs of tampering, do not use the machine and report it to the bank immediately,
- if a cash machine is being used, please stand a reasonable distance away until the person has completed his or her transaction. The cash machine may have a ‘zone’ around it; please keep this space clear when the cash machine is being used.
When using a cash machine:
- always be aware of your surroundings; if someone is crowding you, or ‘shoulder surfing’, cancel the transaction and go to another machine,
- do not accept help from ‘well-meaning’ strangers and never allow yourself to be distracted,
- stand close to the cash machine and always shield the keypad to avoid anyone seeing you enter your PIN.
When leaving a cash machine:
- put your money and card away quickly before leaving the cash machine, once you have completed a transaction,
- if the cash machine does not return your card, report it immediately to your card issuer.
