Check that a web site is secure

Do you have a secure connection?
You should only ever carry out banking and other confidential transactions over secure internet connections. Connections like these make it hard for others to spy on you and steal your personal details. But how can you tell if you have a secure website connection?

How to find out if you have a secure connection
There are two ways you can see if you have a secure connection.

Once a secure connection is established*:

  • The first few characters of the web address in your address bar will change from the usual http to https – the ‘s’ stands for secure.
  • You’ll see a little padlock icon, in the locked position, appear in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.

Check for a secure connection every time you log on to internet banking. It helps to keep your data safe.

* These guidelines apply to Internet Explorer 4.0. If you have a different type of browser the ‘https’ will be the same but the padlock may appear as a slightly different icon and it may appear in a different location.
